From April, India is planning its own car crash-test rating. India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: From next April, Indian carmakers can get their vehicles tested on safety standards; Get a “Star Rating” here and there will be no need to send them abroad. The road transport ministry on Friday published a draft standard for “star rating” of new cars on safety parameters under a new framework. India NCAPWhich is proposed to be started in the next 10 months.
While India has mandatory crash test norms for cars, the India NCAP rating would be of a better standard. Unlike other countries where the New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) is conducted by non-governmental organizations, India will have an India NCAP authority. The authority will also host the safety ratings of all new car models on a website for public knowledge, which will be based on three vehicle features – Adult Occupant Protection (AOP), Child Occupant Protection (COP) and security support technologies (sat).
central minister Nitin Gadkari said that India NCAP will serve as a “consumer centric platform, enabling customers to choose safer cars based on their star rating“This will foster a healthy competition among original equipment manufacturers in India to manufacture safer vehicles,” he said.
While it would be optional for automakers to submit their cars for evaluation, the central government would also ask the authority to select a particular variant of a model for evaluation “in the interest of public safety” at any designated crash testing centre. can. , Sources said such an option would be explored if there are some general complaints about the safety aspects of the car model.
The criteria proposes guidelines for vehicle selection for star rating. For example, at least 30 vehicles of a model have to undergo testing to receive the rating if that model had sales of 30,000 units in the previous year. The manufacturer must provide the base version for tests. The base variant is defined as the one that is equipped with the standard items displayed across all the ranges of that particular model.
