From poll strategist to outfit making, PK’s ‘new beginning’ will come from Bihar. Can he wield his magic wand?

Prashant Kishor’s announcement of plans for a new political outfit probably comes after disillusionment or disapproval, as you might call it. When he announced that he would quit strategy planning and explore politics the day the results of the West Bengal assembly elections were announced in May last year, Prashant Kishor, also known as PK, announced on Twitter. Did, exactly a year later, form a front, Jan Sooraj said, “It’s time to go to the real lord – the people”. For this, he is expected to “begin with Bihar” – his home state.

But PK has started only after his ‘break’ from Congress. After a slew of presentations and over 200 pointed to deep speculation that he would wear the Congress cap, PK declined the offer to join the party. The reality is that the Congress, with its many ambitions and arrogance, was not ready to just link them with the Gandhi family and give them a free hand.

The first attempt to form a similar group was made in February 2020, when he broke away from the JD(U), where he took over as the party’s vice-president, when Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was leading the party. Kishor shared good relations with Nitish who, in fact, elevated him to the rank of party. But after a year and a half, PK and Nitish parted ways, with the former accusing him of compromising on the principles and ideals he had fought for. ‘Baat Bihar Ki’ was launched in 2020 and aims to reach out to the people of Bihar to assess what they want. Its aim was to create a group of like-minded people who, as he then put it, “help Bihar to find its rightful place among the top 10 states of India”. Soon, ‘Baat Bihar Ki’ got embroiled in controversy for maintaining silence on the Bihar assembly election results and doing nothing beyond that. In fact, PK even faced an FIR when Siddhartha, a Congress-leaning researcher, accused Kishor of raising his idea of a Bihar campaign.

In the present day, PK is expected to use his Jan Sooraj to reconnect with the people of Bihar. Interestingly, the move comes close to speculation that Nitish and the Rashtriya Janata Dal, once allies of the JD(U), came together five years after Nitish visited former chief minister Rabri Devi’s house for an Iftar party . Recently, there have been talks of Nitish’s downfall with the BJP and the saffron party making it clear that it ultimately wants to remain in power in the state alone.

While it is not yet clear what exactly Jan Sooraj will do, sources say that he is not thinking of contesting the elections immediately. The political organization can be used to first tap the rising and somewhat “disillusioned” aspirational youth of Bihar. Many leaders like Chirag Paswan, Tejashwi Yadav are waiting, but PK can now add to the chaos.

Kishor has already announced that he has nothing to do with the Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC) and a new line of leadership has already been established with three directors; She is already handling the TRS for the Telangana Assembly elections next year. Many within I-PAC told News18 that they still see PK as their mentor.

In the political quagmire, especially in Bihar, PK may not be able to wield the magic wand that he often used as an election strategist. He has often been on the win-win side when choosing his clients but has he taken a break from it now? As he himself tweeted. Maybe starting with Bihar – possibly one of the toughest and most challenging assignments that PK has taken up.
