Ganga Dussehra, also known as Gangavataran, is celebrated during the Dashami Tithi of Jyeshtha Shukla Paksha. Gangavataran means the descent of the Ganges. It is celebrated in May or June. Mostly this festival is celebrated a day before Nirjala Ekadashi. Sometimes both these festivals are also celebrated on the same day.

On this holy day, devotees worship Goddess Ganga and take a bath in the holy river. Bathing in the Ganges and doing charity is considered to be of utmost importance. It is believed that the holy dip will free man from all his sins.
To celebrate this day, devotees visit Prayagraj/Allahabad, Garhmukteshwar, Haridwar, Rishikesh and Varanasi to take a holy bath. Ganga Dussehra festival is considered mythological. On this day, apart from bathing in the Ganges, devotees also participate in the Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat.
Importance:
This day is dedicated to Goddess Ganga. The day commemorates the occasion when Ganga descended on earth to purify the cursed souls of Bhagirath’s ancestors. Before she descended on earth, Goddess Ganga was residing in the kamandal of Lord Brahma. Goddess Ganga also brought the purity of heaven during her descent on earth.
The occasion should not be confused with Ganga Jayanti. Ganga Jayanti commemorates the occasion when Goddess Ganga was born.
Worship Method:
After taking a dip in the Ganges, offer water to the Sun God. Immerse a betel leaf, flower and rice in water. Apart from these things, lamps can also be immersed. The things that are immersed should be placed in the order of 10. After these things are immersed in the attar, you can start the Ganga Aarti. Lord Shiva and Vishnu should be worshiped after performing Ganga Aarti.
