Mohan’s release was necessitated after the Bihar government recently amended prison rules allowing the release of 27 convicts, including him.

he was serving Life sentence in 1994 for the murder of G Krishnaiah, the then District Magistrate of Gopalganj. After the Bihar government amended the rules of the prison manual, an official notification said that 27 prisoners who have served 14 years or 20 years in jail have been ordered to be released.

Posters have been put up at Veer Kunwar Singh Chowk in the district to welcome former MP Anand Mohan.

The gangster-turned-politician was earlier on parole for 15 days to attend the engagement ceremony of his MLA son Chetan Anand. He returned to Saharsa jail on April 26 after completion of parole period.

Earlier on Wednesday, the State Prisons Department had released about 14 convicts from various jails of the state. Mohan was among eight others who could not be released yesterday.

There has been a strong reaction from the opposition in the state regarding the release of the former MP from jail.

Reacting to the furore over his impending release, Anand Mohan Singh on Tuesday took a jibe at the BJP and said even the convicts in the Bilkis Bano case were released under pressure from Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

He said he has “full sympathy” with the family of the slain IAS officer. ,

In Muzaffarpur on 5 December 1994, G Krishnaiah, the District Magistrate of Gopalganj was killed by a mob allegedly instigated by Anand Mohan Singh. He was dragged out of his official car and beaten to death. G Krishnaiah, a 1985 batch IAS officer, hailed from Mahbubnagar in present-day Telangana.

Anand Mohan was sentenced to death by the trial court in 2007. A year later, the sentence was commuted to life imprisonment by the Patna High Court. Mohan then challenged the verdict in the Supreme Court but so far no relief has been found and he is in Saharsa Jail since 2007.

His wife Lovely Anand has also been a Lok Sabha MP, while his son Chetan Anand is an RJD MLA from Shivhar in Bihar.
