Germany has won the Davis Cup three times but not since 1993. Germany will take on either Sweden or Russia on Saturday in their first semi-final since 2007. In the second semi-final, Croatia will face either Serbia or Kazakhstan.

Britain were seeking their fourth semi-final berth in the previous six editions of the tournament. It last won the competition in 2015.

Struff said his win over Norrie was “one of the most important wins of my career. Cam Norrie is a real fighter. I started very well, went 4-1, but when you take so many risks, you Hopefully there will be more mistakes.”

12th-ranked Norie failed to complete the opening set against Struff when he was 6-5 and the Briton missed out on two set points in the tiebreaker.

A break at the halfway point of the set was enough for Nori to take second, but 51st-ranked Struff took four games in a row to win the third.

“At the end of the match I managed to play aggressively again at the start,” said Struff.

In the first singles match, Evans made a swift 4–0 lead and did not suffer a break point throughout the day. Gojowczyk scored only two points on Evans’ serve in the second set and double-faulted at match point for the fourth time.

“I tried to get some rhythm in the beginning,” Evans said. “I played well from start to finish.”

Gojowczyk was a surprise pick by Germany captain Michael Kohlmann. The 86th-ranked player replaced Dominic Koefer, who is up 32 places, and played in two group matchups that Germany won against Austria and Serbia.

Gojowczyk never played Evans in an ATP level match, but had twice defeated the Briton in a lower-ranked tournament, in 2013 and 2016.

No spectators were allowed on the grounds of Olympiaworld amid a nationwide lockdown in Austria to fight the spread of the coronavirus.

Madrid will host the rest of the Davis Cup final.
