The girl has been referred to Ranchi hospital.
According to the police, the accused Rajesh Raut knew the 19-year-old girl and was already married.
“So far, it is learned that the girl was attacked while she was sleeping by an acquaintance of hers. He has been referred to Ranchi. The accused is already married and wants to marry the victim. The parents (of the girl) were not ready for the marriage,” said Shivendra, deputy superintendent of police, Jarmundi.
DSP Shivendra also told that on Thursday night the accused was seen running away from the spot after committing the crime.
Reacting to the incident, Pratul Shadeo of the Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday took a jibe and said that “law and order in Jharkhand has completely collapsed”.
He linked the case with Ankita, a class 12th girl who was burnt alive while sleeping in Dumka for turning down an offer.
Ankita was set ablaze on 23 August and died on 28 August while undergoing treatment at the Rajendra Institute of Medical Science (RIMS).
