Chandigarh University students in Punjab’s Mohali protest after a girl allegedly leaked private videos of her hostel mates online. The police have registered a case and arrested the accused girl.

  1. Police and the university administration have debunked social media posts which claimed that several girls attempted suicide after their videos were leaked. Officials of the private university have said that a girl was admitted to the hospital after she fainted and her condition is now stable.

  2. “In our investigation so far, we have found that there is only one video of the accused. He has not recorded any other video of anyone else. The electronic devices and mobile phones have been taken into custody and sent for forensic examination. Mohali police chief Vivek Soni said, news agency ANI reported.

  3. Mr Soni said that no death or suicide attempt has been reported and appealed people not to believe in rumours. “A student taken in the ambulance was suffering from anxiety and our team is in touch with him,” he said.

In a statement issued by Chandigarh University, Pro-Chancellor Dr RS Bawa said, “The rumors circulating through the media that 60 objectionable MMSs of students have been found… are completely false and baseless. During preliminary investigation, the university has not found any video of any student which is objectionable, except a private video shot by a girl which she shared with her boyfriend.”

Dr. RS Bawa further said that based on the request of the students, the Chandigarh University had “voluntarily given further investigation to the Punjab Police Department itself, which has detained a girl and lodged an FIR under the IT Act.. All mobile phones and other material have been handed over to the police for further investigation.”

Ms Gulati further clarified that an ambulance was called to the campus last night after some of the students involved in the protest were suffering from anxiety.
