From the next academic year, students in all Haryana schools will be taught to read shlokas (sacred verses) from the Hindu religious book Bhagavad Gita, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal said while speaking at the ongoing ‘International Gita Mahotsav’ in Kurukshetra on Saturday.
Speaking at the sixth seminar of the two-week-long festival, the Haryana Chief Minister said that books related to Bhagavad Gita would be taught in classes 5 and 6.

Urging the youth to imbibe the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita, he said that there were many books preaching different ideas, but none can be compared with the Bhagavad Gita, which gave direction to life. He said that the youth should use the teachings of Gita in their daily life. He further said that if one could simply imbibe one shloka, “it was enough to be successful in life”, as reported by the media.
The CM also took to Twitter to make a similar announcement. He said that Gita is the essence of life and we should imbibe its teachings in our lives, he tweeted,

Earlier Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) had demanded Declared ‘Bhagavad Gita’ as the national book of India And its teaching-learning was made compulsory at all levels of education in the country “to prevent erosion of values”.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla was also present on the occasion. An arts and crafts fair is also being organized during the ongoing festival from December 2-19. Apart from this, the main program is being organized from 9-14 December and the district level ‘Gita Jayanti’ program from 12-14 December.
