Give autonomy to HMT unit, demands Chandran Pillai

Kochi

GCDA President K. Chandran Pillai has urged HMT Chairman and Managing Director AK Jain to increase the workforce at its Kalamassery unit by recruiting at least 100 new employees.

He told the Chairman in Kochi that functional autonomy and strengthening of the workforce would improve the performance of HMT Machine Tools, Kalamassery and would also create more employment opportunities. Shri Pillai said that HMT Kalamassery continued its record of making profit in the last financial year also with a working profit of 9.5 crores. He said that if the interest liability at the rate of 15.5 per cent on loans given for the retirement scheme compulsorily introduced by the Center from 2006 was removed, the actual profit of the unit would increase to Rs 7 crore.

The Kalamassery unit, which once had 3,500 employees, now had only 135 regular employees and 250 on contract. He added that with at least 500 permanent employees, the unit would be able to manufacture products worth over Rs 200 crore annually.
