GJM takes a dig at full implementation of Gorkhaland Accord, asks Mamata to delay elections

The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) has asked Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee not to hold Gorkha Territorial Administration (GTA) elections as she demanded full implementation of the GTA accord and suggested a political solution to the long-pending issue of Gorkhas.

The West Bengal government, in consultation with the State Election Commission, has decided to hold the GTA elections in June.

The demand for separate Gorkhaland has been made for many decades. Gorkhaland consists of Nepali speaking people from Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Kurseong and other hill districts. In 2011, when the Trinamool Congress government came to power, a GTA agreement was signed between the Union of India, the Government of West Bengal and the GJM leaders for an autonomous arrangement within the state, but without abandoning the demand for a separate Gorkhaland state. mentioned in the said agreement.

GJM general secretary Roshan Giri stressed in the letter that most of the points mentioned in the GTA agreement have not been fulfilled.

“The devolution of the above powers remains an illusion till date and the transferred departments are not even in a position to fill the vacancies in the said departments arising out of retirement. However, there is no additional or new financial burden on the Government by filling up the existing vacancies. Will have.

Further, Giri mentioned that a committee is yet to be formed, which will really understand that most of the area of Tarain Duar should be under GTA. “The High Powered Committee mentioned in the said agreement is yet to be constituted, which strikes at the root of the trust to be created through the said agreement. The entire 396 Gorkha-majority and Gorkha Mauja (area less than one sub-division)) is yet to be included in the GTA and this is another major cause of discontent and discontent among the people of the region.

The letter also emphasized that the immediate memorandum of the proposal would be considered by the government on further priority as the GJM has not made any new demands or concessions aimed at creating an atmosphere of trust and brotherhood, which would lead to a longer period of time. May the way be easy. Pending political settlement of Gorkhas and their identity.

Ahead of the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections, the GJM broke its alliance with the BJP and supported the TMC. The GJM claims that some promises were made to them, one of which was the demand that the cases against Bimal Gurung be withdrawn. There were about 50 cases against Gurung but only a few were withdrawn but nothing special happened after the 2021 elections.
