1. Cold wave in Delhi

The national capital is in the grip of severe cold wave. Delhi’s Ayanagar recorded the lowest temperature of this season at 1.8 degree Celsius on Friday morning. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Safdarjung recorded a minimum temperature of 4.4 degrees Celsius while The Ridge recorded 3.3 degrees Celsius. Northwest India was covered with a thick layer of smog.

2. XBB.1.5 Omicron Subvariant

There has been an increase in the number of cases of the XBB.1.5 variant of COVID-19. Currently seven cases have been reported in India. The Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) said three cases have been found in Gujarat and one each in Karnataka, Telangana, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan.

3. Amazon will cut 8000 jobs

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has announced that the company is planning to cut over 18,000 jobs from its workforce following accelerated hiring during the pandemic. This comes a few months after Amazon announced it would lay off 10,000 workers.

CEO Andy Jassy said in a statement to his employees, “Combining the cuts we outlined in November and the ones we’re sharing today, we plan to eliminate just over 18,000 roles.”

4. Egg, chicken in mid-day meal

The West Bengal government is now planning to include eggs, chicken and good seasonal fruits in its mid-day meal system for schools, amid allegations by the BJP that the ruling TMC has misused the PM Poshan programme. Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Shubhendu Adhikari has complained about the matter to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

5. Meghalaya Assembly Election First List

Trinamool Congress has released its first list of 52 candidates for the upcoming assembly elections. The party has also given 5 tickets to women candidates. Two sitting TMC MLAs – Miyani Dalbot Shira (Ampati) and Dikkanchi Dalbot Shira (Mahendraganj) – figure in the first list.
