UK-based addressing system What3Words which has divided every 3 meters of the planet into pixel-like blocks defined by three random words, has expanded in India in partnership with TVS Motors. The service already had tie-ups with Tata Motors and has also been integrated into Mercedes Benz vehicles globally.

Chris Sheldrick, CEO and co-founder of What3words, explained, “We’ve divided the world into three-by-three-meter squares. And we’ve named each with three words out of the dictionary.” Sheldrick says What3words splits parts of the ocean into 3m blocks with a dedicated address in 3 words.

Sheldrick also revealed in an interview with carandbike.com that over the years the service had been localized to several Indian languages with a team of 50 linguists. Sheldrick revealed that the company had been building the service in India for four years and also has a business development team based in Bangalore.

“We have been working on the development of Indian language systems for four years, and then all those languages were launched in the last one year or so,” he said.

But more than that, it has a tie-up with Mercedes-Benz and has also integrated its service into Tata’s IRA-connected car stack which is available on cars like Nexon, Altroz and Punch. And now this service is coming for two wheelers as well.

Apart from this, What3words has also partnered with BVG MEMS in Maharashtra. “We have entered into a partnership with BVG MEMS, the operator for an ambulance service in Maharashtra. And they have now used What3words for several real-life rescues where people called emergency numbers but didn’t know That’s where they were. And they were able to speak three words on the phone,” Sheldrick revealed.

Sheldrick revealed that What3words has also made a $10 million investment from Times Group in India for further expansion in India from its Brand Capital Venture arm.

One of the areas it wants to partner with is the ride-sharing space and Sheldrick, without sharing specifics, revealed that What3words was in active talks with the likes of Ola and Uber.
