Global markets update: US stocks close mixed on profit-booking

On the Wall Street, US stocks closed mixed on Wednesday on profit-booking ahead of key economic data and Fed policy meet next week. 

The S&P 500 fell 16.33, or 0.4%, at 4,267.52. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 91.74, or 0.3%, at 33,665.02. The Nasdaq composite fell 171.52, or 1.3%, at 13,104.89.

Microsoft, Amazon, Nvidia and Alphabet all sank at least 3%.

In the bond market, the yield on the 10-year treasury rose to 3.78% from 3.68% late Tuesday. The 2-year yield rose to 4.55% from 4.50%.

Currencies

The US dollar rose to 140.13 Japanese yen from 139.66. The euro rose to $1.0703 from $1.0693.

Canada

Canada  stocks fell on Wednesday as the Bank of Canada raised its benchmark interest rate for the first time since January.

The Toronto Stock Exchange’s S&P/TSX composite index ended down 71.91 points, or 0.4%, at 19,983.69.

The Bank of Canada hiked its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points to a 22-year high of 4.75%.

Europe

European stocks slid on Wednesday on losses in healthcare stocks.

The pan-European STOXX 600 index fell 0.2%.

Britain’s FTSE 100 fell less than 0.1% at 7,624.34. Germany’s DAX lost 0.2% at 15,960.56. France CAC 40 down less than 0.1% at 7,202.79.

Spain’s IBEX 35 index rose 0.5% to close at a six-week high.

Asia

In Asia, stock markets were mixed on Wednesday.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index gained 0.8% at 19,252.00. China’s Shanghai Composite added 0.1% at 3,197.76.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 fell 1.8% at 31,913.74.

Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 index ended 0.2% lower at 7,118.0. New Zealand’s benchmark S&P/NZX 50 index fell 0.9% to end the session at 11,759.15.

Energy prices 

Brent crude for August delivery rose 66 cents to $76.95 a barrel on Wednesday. US crude oil benchmark for July delivery rose 79 cents to $72.53 a barrel.

Natural gas for July delivery rose 7 cents to $2.33 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Bullion

Gold for August delivery fell $23.10 to $1,958.40 an ounce. Silver for July delivery fell 14 cents to $23.53 an ounce.
