GM bets the farm on EVs and this battery management system will make the transition more manageable

GM’s journey towards becoming an electric car brand is moving very fast. It has also developed its own Altium battery and a new motor which is also under the Altium brand. Now, it’s pushing the envelope again with battery management software. It has worked with Boston-based Analog Devices to create a wireless battery management system for its Altium battery. Unlike most systems where the controlling computer is on the car itself, GM’s solution will operate over the cloud, possibly over a 5G or 4G network where the interaction between the car and the computer and management software occurs wirelessly.

GM is saying it reduces the wiring in the pack by about 90 percent which helps increase range and allows for easier scalability and reuse of batteries. But it also means that these batteries cannot be reused in other cars. GM’s system works because its cars support over the air updates that have become pretty standard across the industry. The system’s obvious weakness is that GM’s new EVS will use a cloud-based battery management system for battery management if connectivity is severed

GM has designed its own battery architecture called Altium

GM EV boss Kent Helfrich said in a statement, “Scalability and complexity reduction are a theme with our Ultium batteries—the wireless battery management system is the key enabler of this amazing flexibility.”

“The wireless system represents the epitome of Altium’s configurable capability and should help GM build a massively profitable EV,” he said.

GM has several EVs in the pipeline, the most notable being the new Hummer EV and its pick-up version with the Cadillac Lyrica. Most GM branded vehicles are also going EV, so the new generation of Altium batteries is going to be critical to its success.
The system may not work.
