Go on a Tour of Traditional Indian Flavors at GT Road Restaurant, Delhi

The modern culinary landscape in India is witnessing a drastic shift towards western foods. But the allure of traditional cuisine still hasn’t waned; In fact, it is here to stay forever. The only problem is to find those long forgotten flavors that still conquer our hearts. GT Road Restaurant, located in the heart of Delhi, offers an experience of tasting good old food with traditional flavors and cooking techniques. GT Road takes patrons on a gastronomic journey of 2600 km, the oldest highway in Asia passing through areas between Kabul and Chittagong, with a wealth of flavors to share.

In the 16th century, the Grand Trunk Road was the first route from Kabul to Kolkata by merchants. Grills and barbecues of Afghanistan and Pakistan, fish fry of Amritsar, Nawabi cuisine of Delhi and Agra, macherjhol in Kolkata is cooked with fresh spices and eaten with fermented bread and luchi. The area has acquired its own historical and geographical importance, but the food along the route is a living story in itself.

GT Road aims to stir the pot with authentic taste and aroma that keeps the merchants well fed and satiated. The moment you step into the restaurant, ancient swords, knives, guns and currency coins of that time welcome you. The old paintings on the walls add a fascinating grandeur and glory to the heritage of our country.

The menu is so vast that I was spoiled for choice during my visit. I started my meal with chaat and Dahi Bhalla Chaat was to die for. It had just the right amount of tantric spices with sweetness.

I tried to get almost all of the kebabs from the live barbecue grill, right there on my table. The ones that really stood out were the great taste and texture – Bhatti Ka Chatpata Paneer Tikka and Dahi Ke Kebab from the Vegetarian section and Achari Machhi Ka Tukda and Zafrani Murg Tikka from the Non-Vegetarian section.

I likedRed Sauce Pasta from Live Counter. This is a great option for kids dining with families. also, don’t forget to pair hot jalebi with rabri.

From the buffet, almost everything was delicious. I highly recommend trying the Dal Sultani, Amritsari Chole, Murgh Makhanwala and Egg Curry.

And don’t forget to end your meal on a sweet note with Shahi Tukda, Sugar-Free Gulab Ki Kheer and Vanilla Fruit Pudding.
