Godavari flood level highest in 16 years, more than 20 lakh affected

More than two million people have been affected by the raging Godavari with flood flows exceeding 2.5 million cusecs on the evening of 16 July, the largest discharge at Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage at Doleswaram since August 2006. The flood discharge in Godavari on 7 August 2006, which was the second highest recorded 28,50,664 cusecs (35.06 lakh cusecs) on 16 August 1986.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan directed the district collectors to provide 25 kg rice, 1 kg tur dal, 1 kg potato, 1 kg onion and 25 kg edible oil to the flood-affected families.

According to CM, for relief living in disaster centers should not exceed 2,000 per family, or 1,000 per person. Preliminary estimates indicate that the rains have damaged 5,928.73 hectares of horticultural crops and 3,173.58 hectares of agricultural crops. According to the SDMA, 1,101.32 km of roads have also been damaged.

Up to 628 villages in these districts—particularly the island villages known as Lanka—under 44 mandals in these districts were now affected by severe floods, and there was still no sign of a break in the storm. However, the decrease in rainfall, especially in the high catchment areas of Godavari Maharashtra and Telanganahas given rise to optimism that the floods will pass in the coming days.

It was exciting to know that upstream flood level Bhadrachalam in neighboring Telangana experienced a one-foot drop on July 16, but officials here warned that the cotton barrage discharge could increase to 2.8 million cusecs in the next 30-36 hours. Though it seemed impossible, the state authorities are actually preparing for the inflow and outflow of 3 million cusecs by late Sunday night at the cotton barrage.

data from State Disaster Management Authority Show that the authorities have so far shifted 69,746 residents of the affected communities to 156 relief camps. At Rajamahendravaram, two helicopters of the Indian Navy have been kept on standby to carry out rescue and relief efforts as required. The Collectors of the respective districts were directed by the Chief Minister to remain on high alert for at least the next 24 hours. NDRF and SDRF have sent ten teams each to assist in the rescue and relief efforts.
