Just as it has been doing for many years, the HFPA gathered reporters at the Beverly Hilton to announce their choice for the 79th Golden Globes. But this time there were no morning show live spots or instant celebrity celebrations.

The HFPA, in which usually a handful of movie stars make their announcements, read the nominees behind sunglasses and red hats instead of Snoop Dogg. Most studios, public relations firms and A-list talent haven’t engaged much with the group this year. Critics have said that it is too soon for the HFPA to get back to business as usual. Some people wish the globes were gone for good.

But the Press Association was all set to maintain its perch throughout awards season on Monday, spreading nominations around the likes of Will Smith (“King Richard”), Kristen Stewart (“Spencer”), the success of “West Side Story” and Rachel Ziegler. tried. Leonardo DiCaprio (“Don’t Look Up”), Denzel Washington (“The Tragedy of Macbeth”), Ben Affleck (“The Tender Bar”) and Lady Gaga (“House of Gucci”).

Best Picture, Drama nominees include Jane Campion’s gothic western “The Power of the Dog”, Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic “Dune”, family drama “CODA,” Renaldo Marcus Green’s tennis biopic “King Richard” and Kenneth went. Branagh’s autobiographical “Belfast.”

Comedy or Musical Picks for Best Picture were: Adam McKay’s apocalyptic comedy “Don’t Look Up,” Paul Thomas Anderson’s ’70s San Fernando Valley comedy “Licorice Pizza,” Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story,” Lin- Manuel Miranda’s “Tick, Tick… Boom!” and Joe Wright’s “Cyrano.”

“Belfast” and “The Power of the Dog” tied for the most nominations, with seven each. Netflix dominated the film’s nominees with a total of 17 nominations.

Normally, such an honor would quickly lead to a flurry of joy from the nominees and their studios, who fumed their victories on social media and in calls with journalists. On Monday morning, none of the nominees immediately celebrated — publicly, at least.

The Press Association claims it has reinvented itself in the nine months since the 2021 show. “HFPA 2.0,” said recently elected president Helen Hohen. The group has added a Chief Diversity Officer; repaired your board; 21 new members inducted, including six black journalists; Brought to the NAACP on a five-year partnership; and updated its code of conduct.

“This has been a year of change and reflection for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association,” Hohen said Monday.

This all happened after the Los Angeles Times exposed some of the HFPA’s unethical behavior and revealed that a black journalist was not among its 87 voting members. Studios said they would boycott Globe and more than 100 PR films said their clients would not participate unless the HFPA rapidly implements “profound and lasting change”. Tom Cruise returns his three Globe Group headquarters.

Globes’ longtime telecaster NBC has said it will not air the 2022 Globes because “a change of this magnitude takes time and work.” The Globes still set the date for January 9, but hasn’t shared any details about what kind of ceremony it will be.

Much of the power of the Globes has always been in its live broadcasts, which regularly rank among the most-watched non-sports broadcasts of the year. The Globes also serve as a promotional tool for the many awards-optimists that hit theaters in December. But this year, some expect commercials and TV commercials to spark the film’s Golden Globe nominations.
