Google, Apple face a ‘PUBG problem’ for letting you play Garena Free Fire

PUBG Mobile’s developer Crafton has started a big lawsuit. The company is suing two mobile games it accuses of copying PUBG, and the company is also suing Google and Apple for distributing these games on their respective app stores. A South Korean developer is suing Google’s YouTube for hosting videos and livestreams of two games’ gameplay, as well as the post “a feature-length Chinese film that clearly violates Battlegrounds’ live-action dramatization.” There’s nothing more to do.”

The games that Crafton is following are the popular games Garena Free Fire and Garena Free Fire Max which have gained significant popularity over the past few months. Both games are available for free with in-app purchases, and offer an experience similar to PUBG: Mobile, where a set number of players battle it out in squads in an open-world arena. “Free Fire and Free Fire Max, individually and in combination, extensively mimic many aspects of Battlegrounds, including Battleground’s copyrighted unique game opening “air drop” feature, game structure and play, weapons, armor and unique Includes a combination and selection of objects, locations and an overall choice of color schemes, materials and textures,” Crafton was quoted as saying.

Crafton alleges that Garena has made hundreds of millions of dollars from sales on these apps, and that Apple and Google have also generated substantial amounts of revenue from the distribution of Free Fire and, more recently, Free Fire Max.

In its lawsuit, Crafton claimed on December 21, 2021, it took certain actions that included asking Garena to “immediately stop exploiting the two games”. This was explicitly rejected by the Free Fire publisher. Crafton then asked Apple as well and Google stopped distributing the games, but both are still available on both App Stores. It asked YouTube to take down videos related to Garena Free Fire and Free Fire Max gameplay, which include elements that infringe on Battlegrounds and the feature-length film described above. Crafton has said that YouTube has yet to act on its request.

Crafton also says that Garena sold a game in Singapore in 2017 that “mimicked” PUBG: Battlegrounds. Now, while the claims were made in connection with the claims, no license agreement was established as per the lawsuit.

In October 2021, Garena Free Fire was the most downloaded mobile game in the world on the Google Play Store, according to a report by Sensor Tower in October 2021. It was the tenth most popular game on Apple’s App Store during the same time period. In addition, a report in The Verge citing Senor Tower numbers showed that Free Fire generated $1.1 billion (about Rs 8,149 crore) in player spending in 2021. This was a 48 percent jump from the number of games in 2020.

The report, citing data from AppFigures, says that while PUBG Mobile is still ahead in terms of revenue, Garena Free Fire is gaining ground. The game made $414 million in 2021, while PUBG Mobile made $639 million, which includes the India and China-specific versions of the game.

Apple and Google did not immediately respond to a query regarding the same. The Verge reports Garena’s spokesperson as saying that Crafton’s claims are “baseless.”
