On Otto Wicherl’s 108th birthday, Google celebrated his life and legacy with a doodle. Otto Wicherle was a Czech chemist who invented the soft contact lens. Vichterle was born on this day in 1913 in Prostejov, Czech Republic. The Google doodle depicts Otto Wichler holding a piece of contact lens on his fingers. In the doodle, light is reflected to form the Google logo in the background, as a representation of vision. Wichterle received his doctorate in organic chemistry from the Prague Institute of Chemical Technology in 1936. He taught as a professor at his alma mater during the 1950s. During the same period, he developed an absorbent and transparent gel for eye implants.
