Google: Google asks app developers to explain purpose of collecting users’ data – Times of India

New Delhi: Internet chief Google On Tuesday, app developers were asked to explain the purpose of collecting user data and also to clarify whether the data has been shared with any third parties.
The company said in a latest blog post that users will start seeing the data protection section in the Google Play app store starting April 27, and developers will have to complete the section for their apps by July 20.
Google said that based on feedback from users and app developers, it has learned that displaying the data an app collects without additional context is not enough.
It states that users want to know for what purpose their data is being collected and whether the developer is sharing user data with third parties.
“In addition, users want to understand how app developers are securing user data once the app is downloaded. That’s why we designed the data protection section so that developers can clearly mark what data is being collected.” and for what purpose it is being used. Users can also check whether this data is required for the app to function or if this data collection is optional,” the blog post said.
According to the blog post, the apps should help users explore the world, connect with loved ones, work, learn something new and do a lot more without compromising on user safety.
“The new data protection segment, in addition to the existing security features of Google Play, provides visibility and control for people to enjoy their apps,” the post said.
