Gorkha Janmukti Morcha leader Binay Tamang joins TMC, says- wants to see Mamata Banerjee as PM

Nearly five months after resigning from the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) faction he formed and led since 2017, former Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) president Binay Tamang on Friday joined the Trinamool Congress after getting a nod from party MP Abhishek Banerjee. joined. He is also holding the charge of All India General Secretary of the party.

Former Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) MLA Rohit Sharma also joined TMC. Many in the Hills believe that it was a deliberate move by Binay ahead of the GTA elections as he is once again eyeing the GTA President’s post.

In October, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced during an administrative meeting held in Kurseong that an initiative would be taken to hold GTA elections and panchayat elections after the electoral rolls were revised.

It is learned that the GTA elections are to be held from 2017 and the last one level panchayat election (Gram Panchayat) was held in 2000 in Hills.

Sources said that the revision of voter list had started from November 1 and it will be completed by January 5.

In such circumstances, the 45-member GTA elections are likely to be held by January-end or February-first week and there is speculation that Binay Tamang may be ready for the top post in the GTA by joining TMC today.

Speaking exclusively to News18.com, Binay Tamang said, “I joined TMC because of Mamata Banerjee’s immense love for the people of the Hills. There is no need for a separate state. The people of the hills want peace and development and this is possible only under the dynamic leadership of Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee. We want to see Mamata Banerjee as the Prime Minister of India.

When asked whether his joining TMC is a calculative step considering the post of GTA president, Tamang said, “I don’t know anything about GTA elections. I want TMC to become GTA president.” Did not join in. Now the GTA is being run by the District Magistrate and he is doing well. It is unfortunate that BJP played dirty politics by showing Gorkhaland lollipops. They tried to divide the people of hills and plains.”

In reference to whether he would accept the post of GTA president when asked by Mamata Banerjee, he said, “I don’t want to comment anything on this issue right now. Your question is very speculative.”

He said, “But I would like to highlight a few things about GTA. There are many issues which need to be resolved like pay band regularization of some GTA employees, more focus on tourism sector, etc. I know, 50 per cent pending issues were resolved but 50 per cent need to be seen to be heard. I am sure these issues will be resolved after GTA elections.

On his current relationship with GJM chief Bimal Gurung, he said, “I share a cordial relationship with Bimal Gurung and I have met him twice as well. We both want the development of the hills and I hope that we will work together for the betterment of our people in the hills.

Responding to Binay Tamang joining TMC, GJM general secretary Roshan Giri said, “I wish him all the best but I would not like to comment on GTA as we don’t want GTA anymore. We are looking for a permanent political solution in the hills.” Looking for.”

When asked to elaborate, he said, “It could be any other body other than GTA which has more powers and more areas in Terai and Dooars. We have heard that Mamata ji will be in Darjeeling soon and we will meet her and from Hills. Will discuss many related issues.
