Government decides on ban on entry of private vehicles in BU campus

The state government will take a decision on banning the entry of private vehicles into the Bangalore University (BU) campus. A marathon meeting of the university’s vice-chancellor, high officials of the police department and civic agencies on Wednesday took the decision to approach the state government for a direction to ban the entry of private vehicles.

After this the students of the university withdrew their protest.

The meeting was organized in the backdrop of students’ protest. After Shilpa Shree, a student who was trying to board a BMTC bus, was seriously injured, the students had staged a protest on various demands on road safety measures in the campus. The students said that several road accidents have taken place on the campus due to poor road conditions and other issues.

After the meeting, Vice-Chancellor Jayakara SM said, “In the meeting, it was decided to introduce several road safety measures. The decision to impose a complete ban on the entry of private vehicles will be taken at the government level. The sudden imposition of the ban will cause a lot of inconvenience to the general public. Several road safety measures will be taken in the coming days keeping in mind the safety of the students and those working in the university. He also welcomed the students’ decision to withdraw their protest.

short term measures

Deputy Commissioner of Police Traffic (West) Kuldeep Kumar Jain said that as a short-term measure, traffic enforcement activities, road engineering works and security measures in the campus will be intensified. The proposed measures include installation of 150 barricades, laying of roaring stripes and lighting the premises. A student committee on safety will be formed in the coming days. Civic agencies will remove recently laid unscientific speedbreakers that have resulted in road accidents.

Enforcement activities will be initiated to check cases of drunken driving and violation of helmet and seat belt rules. It is proposed to deploy home guards and retired police personnel to provide security in the premises.

Student representative Lokesh Ram said, “We are satisfied with the outcome of the meeting. Heads of various departments agreed to implement traffic and safety measures on the campus within a month. If they fail to do so, students will protest. Will help.”
