Government failed to take precautions before Cauvery floods: EPS

Former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Saturday inspected the flood-affected areas in Komarpalayam and accused the DMK government of failing to take precautions to protect people from floods.

Sri Palaniswami along with former ministers P. Thangamani and KC Karuppanan inspected the affected areas and distributed welfare assistance to the flood victims.

Addressing the affected people, Mr. Palaniswami said that Mr. Thangamani provided accommodation and food to the flood-affected people. He said, ‘He is doing what the government should do. Whether in power or not, AIADMK is working for the welfare of the people. He said the DMK government did not provide any immediate assistance to the affected people and its ministers did not go there.

Talking to reporters, he said that 278 houses in Komarapalayam and 328 houses in Pallipalayam have been affected due to the floods in Cauvery. In Erode district, 275 houses were affected in Bhavani, 50 houses in Chandrapatti and 40 houses in Kodumudi.

He said that 300 acres of paddy has been submerged in Ariyalur district due to the Kolidam floods and the revenue department has failed to take precautions despite the Cauvery being in spate for five days. None of the ministers visited the affected areas or the flood victims. Palaniswami said that no proper facilities were provided to those who took shelter in the camps.

He listed the projects started by AIADMK and gradually implemented by the DMK government to save rain water. Among them was the Athikadavu-Avinashi project, which was to be completed in March this year.

Asked about the issue of underweight Aavin milk packets, Mr. Palaniswami said it is a case of scientific corruption, and the DMK is famous for it.
