Government launches DigiYatra facility at 3 airports; promises data security

Government of India has launched DigiYatra facility at three airports across the country. With the new facility, passengers will now be able to get seamless entry to their travels at airports using facial recognition technology. From December 1, the DigiYatra facility will be available at IGI Airport in the national capital, Kempegowda International Airport in Bangalore and Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport in Varanasi. The service will soon start at some other airports in the coming year.

Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia launched DigiYatra Facility at the airport in Delhi on 1 December. As the minister said, the new check-in facility will ensure the security of passenger data as it will be stored in an encrypted format.

In the initial phase, the service will be launched for the airlines that are onboard. Passengers taking domestic flights can avail this facility at the airports of Delhi, Bangalore and Varanasi. Currently, only three airlines – Air India, Vistara and Indigo – are part of DigiYatra, meanwhile SpiceJet plans to join the initiative soon.

In August this year there was a program of DigiYatra roll to Hyderabad International Airport for a period of three months. Meanwhile, the facility has been set at four more airports – Hyderabad, Pune, Vijayawada and Kolkata – by March next year.

In the coming times, the services will be expanded to all the major airports of the country. For passengers taking domestic flights and wanting to check-in through the new technology, the DigiYatra app is available for Android as well as iOS.

To avail the service, passengers will have to register their details on the DigiYatra app. This can be done using Aadhaar-based verification and the image of the traveller. Later, the boarding will be scanned, following which the details will be shared with the airport around 24 hours before the flight time. Passengers will be able to check-in at the airport gate using the barcode on the scanned boarding pass and facial recognition.

However, other procedures including security check and clearance will be as per normal norms.
