MANGALURU: The 55-year-old government upper primary school in Bhaktakodi, Puttur taluk, which has registered good admissions and has a sufficient number of teachers, is in serious trouble in terms of infrastructure.
All classrooms are affected by cracks or termites. Children and staff fear the school, which celebrated its golden jubilee in 2017, could collapse anytime.
Mudanur Panchayat member Kamlesh S told STOI that over the years they have been submitting memorandums to the officials of the Public Education Department, Zilla Panchayat, Taluk Panchayat and local representatives on their arrival at the school. “No one paid heed to our requests. We don’t want to put children’s lives at risk because of the dilapidated building.
Kamlesh said that there are 135 children from class 1 to 7 in the school. It has nine orbits, four of which are completely dilapidated and cannot be used. DPI had closed these classes as they were not safe.
The remaining five classes, though dilapidated, are used for classes.
“The school has seen no maintenance as it was closed for months due to the Covid-19 lockdown. The walls have been damaged by termites and cracks have developed in all corners. We need five new classrooms. If our demand is not accepted, we will hold a protest with SDMC members, parents and villagers.
School Development and Monitoring Committee chairman Vasant Pujari said that due to the deteriorating condition of the building, parents have expressed fear of sending their children to school. “We want the Director of Public Instruction (DPI) to take immediate action and avoid disaster,” he said.
