Government seeks public opinion on newly amended IT (Intermediary) rules

The government is seeking public comments on the proposed draft of the newly amended IT (Intermediary) Rules. The proposals are to ensure an open, secure, reliable and accountable internet for all users and digital citizens. The new rules will not affect startups and will provide additional opportunities for grievance redressal.

On Monday, the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) said in a statement, “The amended IT rules are proposed to provide additional avenues for grievance redressal apart from courts and also ensure that the constitutional rights of Indian citizens are not violated.” is also not violated by big-tech platform by ensuring new accountability standards for SSMI.”

India’s Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Rajiv Chandrashekhar said through his Twitter account, “The newly amended IT (Intermediary) rules are out for public consultation – more effective grievance redressal in ensuring respect for the constitutional rights of citizens.”

It notified the Information Technology (Intermediate Guidelines and Digital Media Code of Conduct) Rules, 2021 (hereinafter referred to as the “IT Rules, 2021”) in February last year.

Through these regulations, the ministry aims to ensure an open, secure and reliable and accountable internet for all Indian internet users and digital citizens. These rules have been successful in creating a new sense of accountability among intermediaries towards their users, particularly within the Big Tech platform.

MeitY has put up the draft amendment of IT Rules 2021 for the feedback and inputs of the public. These are being placed for public consultation and comments of all stakeholders for the next 30 days. A formal public consultation meeting will be held by mid-June, and details will be notified soon.
