Government selects IIT Madras as Institute for Women’s Advancement to support women in training, upskill, STEM

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras It is one of the nationwide selected institutes by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India to advance women in STEM (Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics). GATI or ‘Gender Advancement for Transforming Institutions Initiative’ by DST strives to develop and implement policies and address issues in a systematic and time bound manner.

A GATI Self-Assessment Team (GSAT) has been set up at IIT Madras with several representatives from each group of stakeholders in the institute. The leadership and administration of the Institute is committed to the Gender Equity Charter put together by the GATI team, and GSAT is actively working on the framework developed by Dr. Jolly.

Plans for the immediate future include seminar series on storytelling from women leaders from various sectors, career advancement and networking workshops for employees, programs for women faculty to support women research scholars, community outreach activities and international mobility . Highlighting the commitment of IIT Madras to women in STEM, Prof V Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras said, “The DST initiative is very important and aligns with the broader objectives of IIT Madras. IITM will fully support the GATI initiative.”

DST partnered with British educational institutions to develop GATI, which aims to bring about concrete and positive change in terms of improving the sex ratio. A Gender Equity Charter has also been developed for India-specific context. Dr. Pratibha Jolly, Former Principal, Miranda House, Delhi and her team have developed a methodology for assessing and evaluating the institutional gender climate with a distinctively Indian look.

Highlighting the impact of speed in encouraging women to pursue careers in STEM, Prof. Preeti Aghalayam, Nodal Officer, Speed ​​Self-Assessment Team (GSAT), IIT Madras said, “The DST initiative is at the right time for us.
