Governor seeks details on West Bengal’s Pegasus spyware investigation

In a new face-to-face, Dhankhar offers ‘one last opportunity’ to the state to make documents available by Thursday evening

In a fresh tussle between the West Bengal government and Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar, the latter said later on Wednesday that he was not informed about the Pegasus spyware probe panel and sought documents on it.

Mr Dhankhar tweeted: “Since no document was brought to his notice regarding WB Govt’s notification #Pegasus Inquiry Panel, West Bengal Governor directs Chief Secretary @MamataOfficial to make it available by 5 PM tomorrow , indicating that their previous failure is not commensurate with. constitutional norms. ,

A credible investigation: on the Supreme Court’s decision on the Pegasus controversy

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had in July this year announced the formation of a two-member inquiry commission comprising retired Supreme Court Justice Madan Bhimrao Lokur and former Calcutta High Court Chief Justice Jyotirmoy Bhattacharya to probe the Pegasus spyware controversy.

“Everyone is under observation… We were hopeful that the Center would initiate a probe into the Pegasus dispute under the supervision of the Supreme Court. But even when the Parliament was in session, this government did nothing. So, before going to Delhi, we have decided to set up a commission of inquiry,” Ms Banerjee had said while announcing the commission of inquiry.

Decoding the Pegasus Verdict

The communication shared by the Governor on social media states that he had sought details on the notification and related proceedings on December 6. However, as no response was received from the state government, Mr Dhankhar has provided “one last opportunity” to provide. Notification and related proceedings till 5 PM on 16th December.

Meanwhile, a few weeks ago a West Bengal government press release said that the Commission of Inquiry has started the process of recording evidence and admitting documents with the terms of reference of the notification issued on July 26.
