Govt declares IT resources of ICICI, HDFC, NPCI as critical information infra – Times of India

New Delhi: The government has announced IT resources ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank and UPI Management Unit NPCI As per an official notification, any damage to them as ‘critical information infrastructure’ can have an impact on national security and any unauthorized person with access to these resources can be jailed for up to 10 years. .
The Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY), in a June 16 notification, declared ICICI Bank’s IT resources as critical infrastructure under Section 70 of the IT Act, 2000.
“The Central Government hereby declares the computer resources relating to Core Banking Solution, Real Time Gross Settlement and National Electronic Fund Transfer, including the Structured Financial Messaging Server, which is the critical information infrastructure of ICICI Bank, and the computers of its dependencies. Resources are protected systems for the purpose of the said Act,” the notification said.
In two other similar notifications, MeitY declared the IT resources of HDFC Bank and the UPI management arm National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) as critical infrastructure.
The notification authorizes the IT resources of notified entities by their designated employees, authorized team members of contract managed service providers or third party vendors authorized by them for need-based access and by any consultant, regulator, Government officials, auditors and stakeholders authorized by entities on a case-by-case basis.
“Given the recent sophisticated cyber attacks, it is high time that all banks and financial institutions notify themselves as a protected system.
“Similarly, the control system of all power, oil, airports, railways, metros and transport systems is critical infrastructure and should be declared as a protected system,” said SP, Cyber ​​Crime, Uttar Pradesh Police, and certified Cyber ​​expert Triveni Singh said.
As per the Act, ‘critical information infrastructure’ means a computer resource, the incapacitation or destruction of which would have debilitating effect on national security, economy, public health or security.
Any person who secures or attempts to secure access to a protected system in contravention of the provisions of the Act shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to 10 years and shall also be liable to fine, the Act states. Is.
