GPCB fines Atul 1 crore, plant remains closed. Surat News – Times of India

Surat: On the basis of inspection report by its officers, Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) has issued notice for closure of PHIN-2 plant Atul Limited in valsadi, The plant was damaged by a fire on 20 April. The company has been ordered to pay Rs 1 crore immediately as environmental damage compensation (EDC).
In an order issued by GPCB’s environmental engineer MV Patel, the company has been asked to submit recommendations and compliance reports from various agencies. Along with this, orders have also been given to remove the burnt debris as per the provisions of the law. The closure directive was issued under section 31(a) of the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act. The order mentioned that a fire broke out at the PHIN-2 plant producing Krishi Pharma Intermediate.
“About 8 metric tonnes of hexane and 8 metric tonnes of toluene solvents were burnt. Plant and machinery burned down and the structure of the building collapsed. No death or injury occurred,” the order said.
If the company does not comply with the order, it will be prosecuted air act Which is punishable with imprisonment of up to six years.
