Ground report: Ashish Mishra’s bail is in headlines at Lakhimpur. Can BJP repeat the 8/8 scorecard again?

A close watch is being kept on Lakhimpur district in the 2022 Uttar Pradesh elections, especially after Union Minister Ajay Mishra Teni’s son Ashish Mishra was arrested last October in connection with the Lakhimpur Kheri violence, including four farmers. Eight people were killed. The year.

Lakhimpur The district comprises eight assembly constituencies – Nighasan, which includes Tikunia village where the violence took place, Palliya Kalan, Gola Gokarnath, Dhurahara, Mohammadi, Srinagar, Lakhimpur Sadar and Kasta. Voting will be held on these seats in the third phase of UP elections on February 23.

In 2017, the BJP had won all the eight assemblies. The bloodshed in Tikunia a few months before the elections had raised doubts about the BJP being able to repeat the successes.

On October 3, eight people were killed during violence in Lakhimpur Kheri, when farmers were protesting the visit of Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya to the area. Union Minister Ajay Mishra’s SUV killed four farmers. Angry farmers allegedly thrashed a driver and two BJP workers. A journalist was also killed in the violence that sparked outrage among opposition parties and farmer groups protesting against the Centre’s now repealed agriculture laws.

Lakhimpur is primarily an agricultural area, mainly producing sugarcane and mustard, and there are also several sugar mills in the surrounding area. Trucks and tractors laden with sugarcane can be seen in long queues outside sugarcane crushing plants and mills at all times.

BJP has once again fielded sitting MLA Shashank Verma from Nighasan seat, while Samajwadi Party, which has an alliance with RLD, has given ticket to RS Kushwaha. The latter is a former state chief of the BSP who won the seat in 2002.

The Bahujan Samaj Party has fielded RA Usmani, who had left the SP after not getting a ticket. Meanwhile, Congress has fielded Atal Shukla.

It is a close fight between BJP and SP in Lakhimpur Sadar, Mohammadi, Srinagar and Dhaurhara, but in Nighasan the ruling party cannot be completely eliminated. Locals in Tikunia are still vocal about the October violence, but those outside have a different story to tell.

“The incident has angered some farmers but their numbers are small. Things have now softened with time. People still remember Monu Brother ,Ashish Mishra) to help those in need,” says a non-local.

Speaking to News18 at his camp office, BJP MLA and candidate Shashank Verma said: “The campaign so far is going well and we are getting public support from all sides. This time people are asking for votes for Modi ji and Yogi ji. The biggest issue on which we are seeking votes is development. Our slogan ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’ is being liked by the people.

Samajwadi Party candidate RS Kushwaha, who is busy campaigning in Gauria village, said that the BJP has not yet fulfilled any election promise and people are looking for change.

“People from all sections of the society are supporting the SP as the BJP did not fulfill even a single promise made to the people. In 2002, when I was an MLA from here, there were not many roads, no electricity in the villages. I had ensured good roads, electricity and schools in all the villages here,” Kushwaha told News18.

“The biggest issue in villages today is stray animals destroying crops. If we come to power, the SP government will ensure a separate one. cowshed For such stray animals which will give relief to the farmers as well.”

A tough fight is also expected in Lakhimpur Sadar, where both BJP and SP have repeated their candidates. The BJP has fielded sitting MLA Yogesh Verma, while the SP has fielded Utkarsh Verma. The BSP has given ticket to Mohan Bajpai, who is regarded as a strong local candidate and is known for his dominance in the Sadar assembly seat. Congress has fielded Ravi Shankar Trivedi.
