Surat: Two migrant workers were killed while over 100 people were rescued after a fire broke out at a garment manufacturing unit in Vareli area of ​​Kadodara GIDC in Surat district on Monday.
One person died soon after the fire broke out while trying to get down from the clothesline, while another suffered serious burn injuries as he was trapped in the basement.

More than 100 workers were present in the eight-storey building of Viva Packaging, including two basement floors, when the fire broke out around 4 am. The fire started from the lower floors and gradually rose up.
On alert, police team of Surat district and fire brigade teams of Bardoli, Surat Municipal Corporation and PEBL reached the spot. At least 15 firefighters, snorkels and lifts were deployed to rescue the workers.
A police officer said, “Various firefighting teams rescued over 100 workers. Though fire brigade teams reached the spot within minutes, the fire was spreading very fast.”
