The viral disease has been reported in at least 14 out of 33 districts, which has claimed the lives of at least 1,000 cattle and infected at least 36,000 in the state so far.
Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah has asked the state government, Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (gcmf) and all milk unions will undertake massive vaccination campaigns.
RS Sodhi, Managing Director, GCMMF said, “We have arranged 16 lakh vaccines. The GCMMF on Monday held a meeting of all dairy unions in the state, especially in Kutch and North Gujarat, in view of the spread of LSD.
“We observed that the disease did not infect animals in areas of the state where vaccination campaigns were conducted in the past. Also, the mortality rate is less than 1%, and only in an animal that has a co-morbid condition and Proper treatment has not been given,” Sodhi said.
Sources said the LSD spread from neighboring Maharashtra and Rajasthan to cattle in Gujarat. “Last year, LSD cases were reported in parts of south and central Gujarat. We saw these cases in animals purchased by cattle owners from Maharashtra. This year, we are seeing cases in Kutch and Saurashtra. Early spread It started from the villages. Rajasthan border from where the animals were procured,” said a GCMMF official.
Scientists from state agricultural universities termed the spread as an outbreak. “We’ve seen LSDs in the past but they were sporadic. Now, it’s an outbreak,” said Dr. BD Savaliahead of cattle breeding farm Junagadh Agricultural University, “We completed a vaccination drive to protect our breeding herd 20 days after the initial reports from Porbandar and Jamnagar.”
Interestingly, India officially reported its first case of LSD from Odisha on November 19, 2019.
