Gujarat polls: Kejriwal promises doorstep RTO services for auto-rickshaw drivers

Arvind Kejriwal is on a two-day tour Gujarat, where people will elect a new government in a few months. He also said that his government in Delhi paid 5000 each to around 1.5 lakh auto-rickshaw drivers twice during the pandemic-induced lockdown.

“In Delhi, you don’t need to go to the RTO (Regional Transport Office) for works like renewal of license, change of ownership, permit, or hypothecation. We have given a phone number. Call and tell a Delhi government official. Will come at your doorstep. You will get your license renewed the same way you order pizza over the phone,” he said.

Arvind Kejriwal said, this measure will curb bribery and the auto-rickshaw driver can actually save that money. “You will not need to pay any bribe. But for this you will have to form your government,” he said.

Auto drivers also complained of harassment under section 188 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). “This (section) 188 was also used for harassment in Delhi. I know what this section 188 is. They will make up fake cases, whether someone is an accused or not. They will treat them as if they were murderers. I freed them (Section) from 188, and will do the same in Gujarat.” Kejriwal said.

Section 188 of IPC makes disobedience of orders duly promulgated by a public servant an offence. The offense under the section is punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to six months or with fine 1000.

Kejriwal also said that auto-rickshaw drivers will also avail free and quality benefits. education And health services like the people of Delhi. Since inflation is at record levels, free electricity up to 300 units will ease the burden on auto-rickshaw drivers.
