A special CBI court on Monday sent suspended IAS officer K Rajesh to judicial custody while refusing to take further custody of the investigators in connection with corruption charges.

AHMEDABAD: A special CBI court on Monday sent suspended IAS officer K Rajesh to judicial custody after refusing further custodial interrogation by investigators in connection with corruption charges.
After the completion of his six-day custodial interrogation, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) produced the former district collector of Surendranagar and sought 10 more days for his custodial interrogation.
Rajesh’s counsel Pritesh Khambholja opposed the demand for further remand and submitted that the grounds on which further custodial interrogation was sought were similar to the grounds on which his remand was granted last week. It was submitted that the investigators did not bring any additional material to substantiate their demand and the evidence claimed by the investigating agency was only in the form of allegations.
It was also argued that the CBI was questioning the officer for more than five months since it received the request from the state agency.
However, it has failed to come out with any concrete evidence showing his involvement in any corrupt practices. To defend against allegations of financial irregularities, the counsel showed that Rajesh followed the procedure which is generally followed by all district collectors. Even co-accused Rafiq Memon was questioned and is behind bars for nearly two months, but investigators have not produced any additional evidence.
