Guru Nanak Jayanti 2022: Guru Nanak Jayanti, also known as Gurupurab, is celebrated with great enthusiasm all over India and abroad. The auspicious day marks the birth of the first Guru of Sikhism – Guru Nanak Dev. It falls every year on the full moon day of Kartik month, Kartik Purnima. In 2022, it is being celebrated on 8th November, Tuesday. This day is also celebrated as Prakash Utsav.

Devoted to God since childhood, Guru Nanak Dev was a peace loving person who spent his life exposing equality and tolerance. He was born in 1469 in Rai Bhoi di Talwandi village, now known as Nankana Sahib, near Lahore in present-day Pakistan. Guru Nanak wrote many hymns, which were collected by Guru Arjan in the Adi Granth. He visited pilgrimage sites all over India. The main verses of the Guru Granth Sahib state that the creator of the universe is one. His verses also teach selfless service to mankind.

Guru Nanak Jayanti Celebrations

The Gurpurab festival begins with Prabhat Feris (morning procession), in which devotees sing hymns and visit localities two days before the festival. People follow the Akhand Path by reciting the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy scripture of the Sikhs. Devotees also perform Nagar Kirtan a day before Guru Nanak Jayanti. The procession is led by five men, known as Panj Pyare, who are holding the Sikh triangular flag, the Nishan Sahib. During the procession the holy Guru Granth Sahib is placed in a palanquin and people sing hymns and play traditional musical instruments in groups. On the day of Gurpurab, worship is done in Gurudwaras. Various aspects of the festivities go on till the night and devotees participate in the langar. Eating langar is considered auspicious and kada prasad is the traditional prasad given on auspicious occasions. Many people take part in the service and get food on special days.
