Former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Guru Patil Sirwal has resigned from the primary membership of the party. He took this decision after the party denied him ticket in Shahapur constituency to contest the assembly elections.

Mr. Sirwal is the son of former MLA Shivashekharappagouda Patil from the Sirwal family, which has shared power in the constituency with the Darshanapur family for the past four decades.

Mr. Sirwal, who is a close follower of former Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa, joined hands with Mr. Yediyurappa when he formed the Karnataka Janata Party (KJP) and won the 2013 assembly elections on a KJP ticket. Later he joined BJP when Mr. Yeddyurappa merged his KJP with BJP.

Sources said they were confident that Mr Yediyurappa would get them a ticket this time. But, he lost hope after the party named Aminurdi Yalagi as its candidate. So Mr. Sirwal called a supporters’ meeting and there he decided to quit the party and sent his resignation to state BJP president Nalin Kumar Katil on Wednesday.

He again called his well-wishers, supporters and workers to meet him at Sirwal village on Thursday. All of them advised him to contest the election independently or from any other party. After this he decided that he would contest the elections.

Sources said he is likely to join the Janata Dal (S). However, this is yet to be confirmed from his side. Sources said he would take an appropriate decision in a day or two.
