Guru Purnima 2022: This day is celebrated to acknowledge the contribution and importance of teachers. Guru is worshiped on this holy day. The day falling on Purnima Tithi (full moon day) in the month of Ashadha holds great significance for Hindus, Buddhists and Jains. This day is celebrated with great enthusiasm not only in India but also in Nepal. The word Guru is derived from Sanskrit language where ‘Gu’ means darkness and ‘Ru’ means remover of darkness. Guru Purnima is celebrated all over the world. This year this festival is being celebrated on Wednesday, 13 July 2022.
Guru Purnima is also known as Vyasa Purnima after the author and great sage portrayed in the epic Mahabharata. It celebrates the birth anniversary of Veda Vyasa and disciples worship or pay respect to their gurus. The festival is also celebrated to remember Lord Buddha, who gave his first sermon to the Saptarishis (seven sages) on this day at Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh.
