The series follows Philby’s escape from Beirut to Russia and the unfolding of a scandal that rocks the international intelligence community.

in an interview with Hindu On a Zoom call, the actor talked about the uncertainty involved in playing a character like Philby and his interest in espionage thrillers.

Guy, who has played Andy Warhol, Harry Houdini and Edward VIII in his previous projects, claims there is a certain excitement in playing a real-life person on screen. “It lets me delve into the person’s factual existence and get closer to finding the truth about the character,” he says.

However, he confesses that was not the case when it came to portraying Kim Philby. “With a man like Philby, the truth of character is hidden in the person’s mysterious and mercurial demeanor. For example, at one level he was a charming, affable man in society who could keep a room, but on the other, he harbored a grudge against communism.” used his apparent belief in the U.S. to do the things he did,” commented Guy, who is cautious when talking about his character’s political beliefs.

But the Australian actor has been candid in discussing Philby as a person and admits it was difficult to understand the British intelligence officer’s motivations. “He is a copycat character and a hypocrite. I felt like he was part of two different worlds and I had to find and balance them. It was a very delicate line to walk and I had to be careful with my every move,” he shared.

The 55-year-old is grateful that the nuanced script helped him play the infamous spy, “I know there is a limited narrative through which we are telling his story and it doesn’t require every bit of his inspiration . I only needed to understand and validate what the script does.

The Down Under actor is also quick to express his love for the spy thriller and explains, “Most actors find the world of espionage very intriguing because you have characters who say one thing and do something completely different. Are.” He also likes the posh British accent he had to adapt for the role – he claims it comes easily to him. “I knew about the upper-class British accent because my mother used to go around doing accents all the time and I was exposed to her at an early age,” he laughs. Guy has been praised by critics for the pride he brings to all of his characters. When probed, he reveals that his personal experiences inform the actor in him. “I lost my father when I was young and experiences like these make me feel the urge to portray humanity with a sense of intensity.”

“As actors, I think we bring a certain amount of our personal story to the set, even if we are not aware of it. Intellectually, I’ve always struggled to extract my story from the character but emotionally I think I bring it to every role I play… I hate to think that I’m a Intrude into the character to the point where it becomes confusing or muddled because I don’t want to tell my story through the film,” he says.
