Referring to Pakistan without taking names, he said, “It would have been better if it had spoken about the mistreatment of minorities in the country, which sponsors the IAMC, instead of sharing information about the plight of minorities in India.”
“This is the reason why the people of the country have stopped taking people like him seriously,” he said.
BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain also reacted strongly to Ansari’s veiled criticism of the Centre.
Hussain insisted that for the country’s Muslims, “there can be no better nation than India, no better leader than Narendra Modi and no better friend than Hindus”.
The BJP leader was of the view that Ansari should not have agreed to participate in an online event organized by the Indian American Muslim Council “which is known for its anti-India propaganda.”
“Even as vice-president, Ansari had given rise to controversies for which the people of the country have not forgiven him,” he said without elaborating.
Bahujan Samaj Party disagreed with Hamid Ansari’s statement. Party spokesperson Sudheendra Bhadauria said that the people of India believe in ‘Sarva Dharma Sambhav’.
“Some individuals or groups do not represent the entire country, Hamid Ansari should make it clear what he wants to say near the crucial assembly elections,” he said.

Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) joint general secretary Surendra Jain also hit out at Hamid Ansari, saying his statement that there is an atmosphere of intolerance and insecurity for Muslims in the country is extremely “unfortunate” and “condemnable”.
