‘Happy for Ajinkya Rahane, but what…’: Aakash Chopra questions BCCI

Ajinkya Rahane’s return to the Indian squad for the final of the World Test Championship (WTC) in June has sent the internet into an uproar with social media users giving mixed reactions to the BCCI’s decision. While some are happy and congratulating the batsman, others are skeptical about the choice and some are even questioning the exclusion of budding players from the team.

Former Indian batsman Aakash Chopra congratulated Ajinkya Rahane for his India selection but also raised questions over Suryakumar Yadav’s exclusion from the team. Aakash Chopra questioned why the explosive batsman was picked for the Test team during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and has now been dropped.

“Happy for Rahane. But what’s the point of Skye’s inclusion-exclusion? Select kyun kiya… kar kiya toh kyun kiya drop after one match?),” tweeted Aakash Chopra.

Suryakumar Yadav was selected for the Border Gavaskar Test series against Australia and played one match. The player scored 8 runs and 20 balls and could not showcase his explosive skills during the Test match.

Injuries to two important players of the Indian team – Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer changed the dynamics of the team. Now it is not news that Suryakumar Yadav is yet to show his magic in ODI and Test format of cricket and currently there is already KS Bharat and KL Rahul in the middle order.

The BCCI decided to go for Ajinkya Rahane, a player with more experience in Test matches, as a safe option. Ajinkya Rahane had a good record during the last Ranji Trophy as he scored 634 runs in 7 matches at an average of 57.82. He scored two centuries during the tournament and converted one into a double century.

Indian squad for World Test Championship final:

Rohit Sharma (Captain), Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, KL Rahul, Shrikar Bharat, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Akshar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Umesh Yadav, Jaydev Unadkat.
