Prime minister Narendra Modi Greetings on the occasion of Gujarati New Year on Friday. He tweeted: “Happy New Year to all Gujaratis…!! Happy New Year starting today.” The Gujarati New Year, also known as ‘Bestu Varas’, ‘Varsha-Pratipada’ or simply ‘Padwa’, is celebrated on the Shukla Paksha Pratipada Tithi of Kartik month, That is, every year a day after Diwali.On this day, the Gujarati community worships Lord Krishna and the Govardhan hills.
People also prepare a new book of account called Chopra and Goddess Lakshmi is worshiped on this day. According to popular legend, this day is celebrated in honor of Lord Krishna, who saved the entire Gokul village from the wrath of Lord Indra as he flooded the village with water for a week.
