Harbhajan Singh, Javagal Srinath get life membership of MCC

India’s Harbhajan Singh and Javagal Srinath were on Tuesday among 18 cricketers who were awarded life membership of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC). The MCC at Lord’s is the custodian of cricket laws.

Both Harbhajan and Srinath enjoyed excellent international careers. Harbhajan is India’s third-highest wicket-taker in Tests, with 417 dismissals in 103 Tests and over 700 international wickets across all formats.

Srinath, currently the ICC Elite Panel Match Referee, is one of the greatest fast bowlers of all time with 315 ODI wickets and 236 Test victims.

“This year’s list represents eight of the 12 Test-playing nations, including some of the most recognized names in the modern game,” the MCC said in a statement.

England’s leading Test run-scorer Alastair Cook is joined by fellow countrymen Ian Bell and Marcus Trescothick, with a total of more than 39,000 international runs between them.

England’s fourth star, Sarah Taylor, appeared in this year’s Rachel Hehowe Flint Trophy, Charlotte Edwards Cup and The Hundred, and is recognized as one of the finest wicketkeepers of her generation.

Four South African veterans have been awarded Honorary Life Membership Hashim AmlaHerschelle Gibbs, Jacques Kallis and Morne Morkel all receiving the honours. Kallis’s 13,289 Test runs place him third on the all-time run-scorer list.

Women’s batsman Alex Blackwell and Australian stylish Damien Martin are also involved.

Ian Bishop, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ramnaresh Sarwan all represent the West Indies. Bishop took 161 wickets in just 43 matches, while Chanderpaul is West Indies’ most capped Test player (164) and only seven players have scored more than his 11,867 runs.

Sarwan scored 15 Test centuries, and his 291 against England in 2009 equaled West Indies’ highest individual score on English soil in 1976 by Sir Viv Richards.
