Scottish actor Robbie Coltrane, best known for playing Hogwarts gamekeeper Rubius Hagrid in the ‘Harry Potter’ films, has died at the age of 72. The James Bond and Cracker star died at a hospital near his home in Larbert, Scotland. The award-winning actor was ailing for the past two years. He gained massive popularity as the Half-Wizard of Potter for his touching performances and onscreen relationship with Daniel Radcliffe, who played the lead role of Harry Potter.

One of his fans, shocked by the news, wrote, “Robbie Coltrane adores Hagrid’s character, I always read the character from the book in his voice. Ah, I’m gonna miss him bro.” Another said, “Very sad news that dear Robbie Coltrane has passed away. I have loved him for 26 years. #hagridforever.”

Robbie was born on 30 March 1950 in Glasgow, Scotland, the son of a doctor and teacher. After graduating from Glasgow Art School, she continued her studies in art at the Moray House College of Education in Edinburgh, The Hollywood Reporter reported.

He did stand-up comedy in Edinburgh clubs and changed his last name in honor of jazz legend John Coltrane to act in London.

His early TV credits include “Flash Gordon”, “Blackadder and Keep It in the Family”. His other comedy credits included series such as “A Kick Up the Eighties”, “The Comic Strip” and “Alfresco” as he became a mainstay on British TV screens. He also starred in two James Bond films as he played Valentin Zhukovsky in “GoldenEye” and “The World Is Not Enough”.

In 2019, among his recent appearances, Robbie reprized his role as Hagrid in the fictional short film Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure.
