Hate against migrants triggered by tragedy, #LeaveBengaluru is trending on Twitter

While Karnataka’s capital Bengaluru has witnessed severe waterlogging that has paralyzed many parts of the city, top business executives were seen getting up with families on tractors and boats for their safety. Luxury cars and vehicles were submerged and people had to flee leaving their belongings as water entered their homes. Amidst such chaos and inconvenience, #LeaveBengaluru started trending on microblogging platform Twitter on Wednesday.

What did people tell the ‘migrants’ to leave Bengaluru?

Capital of Karnataka Bangalore It is also the IT hub of the country. Regarded as the ‘Silicon Valley of India’, Bengaluru is one of the most cosmopolitan, multi-ethnic and multilingual cities in the country.

The IT hub has been in the news for the past few days due to incessant rains that have flooded many parts of the city. The dire situation has brought to the fore poor city planning and encroachment on lakes, storm water drains and land through which rainwater naturally flows.

However, ‘locals’ of Bengaluru have pointed out that ‘migrants’ who came to the city in search of ‘shelter, food, jobs’ should not criticize the city. He has put forward his claim and said that ‘migrants should leave the city if there is a problem’.

Several hateful tweets surfaced late Wednesday night with the hashtag leave BangaloreReceive lost migrants. One user wrote, “When it rains in Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi, pray for Chennai, pray for Mumbai pray for Delhi…

“They came to me..made a career..a premium house..partyed..fun weather and night life..changed their family..got a life without learning my language #Kannada till tomorrow … Today they call mebell city..your truth, #Bengaluru.#LeaveBengaluru #GetLostMigrants

Though the flood waters have receded in some areas, the pictures of people running away in tractors from the submerged areas are ready to live in the memory of the people for a long time and now the only ray of hope is relief from the torrential rains.

According to official sources, Water logging Most of the roads have been cleared, while the work of draining water is going on in other affected areas. Traffic is almost returning to normal levels and is expected to be back to normal soon. For those whose daily routine was disturbed due to the rain, it is a matter of relief for them that the rain has stopped.

However, the only eye-catching area near Nagawara turned into an extension of Nagawara Lake during the deluge. High-end cars were submerged, household items washed away, and residents of this posh area near Manyata Techpark rode on tractors and boats with families for their safety.

Vinod Kaushik, CEO of a construction startup, had to vacate his house with his family in a tractor. Another exit was Meena Girisaballa, founder and CEO of Purplefront Technologies. He lamented that the entire gated property was flooded as storm water drains entered their homes. The trouble was not limited to Epsilon.
