Have you ever tried retinol? Here’s Everything You Need to Know About Serums

Retinol or retinoid, an umbrella term used for all derivatives of vitamin A, has taken the skin care world by storm. From celebrity to common man, people have become crazy about this serum. A few drops of a retinol serum can have a transformative effect on the skin as it is able to improve skin texture as well as reduce pigmentation. It also gives a vibrant glow to your face. With so much demand and popularity, it is clear that a lot of misinformation about the content and its uses is spreading on the internet as well.

in chat with Hindustan TimesMany skincare experts, cosmetologists and dermatologists have debunked some of the myths about retinol.

Many people think that retinol or retinoids are too abrasive for the soft area around the eye. Dr. Shraddha Deshpande, consultant aesthetic surgeon and cosmetologist at Wockhardt Hospitals, says that periorbital skin is most prone to lines and wrinkles, and retinol can help smooth and eliminate fine lines. However, it should be used sparingly.

MD Integrative Skin and Aesthetic Specialist Dr Kiran Sethi claims that retinol can be applied for years and will only improve the signs of aging. According to expert, it prevents fine lines, enlarged pores and even acne. However, she suggested that if one’s skin is becoming dry due to ageing, they should reduce the frequency and strength of the serum.

There is a misconception that the product will always show better results with stronger formulas or if used in excess. Well, don’t apply this approach with retinol because jumping to a stronger formula can lead to side effects. It is always advisable to start with a low concentration and then depending on the results, you can increase or decrease the strength of the retinol.

Because retinol is a vitamin A derivative, it penetrates deeply into the skin and stimulates collagen formation, so people often assume that peeling and redness is causing it to exfoliate. Dermatologist, cosmetologist and trichologist, Dr Vandana Punjabi explains that the peeling effect on the skin is visible due to dryness and irritation of the skin.

People also believe that thinning of the skin is due to irritation associated with taking retinoids that are too strong for one’s skin. However, Dr. Punjabi adds that retinol increases cell turnover and promotes dermal collagen remodeling, which ultimately improves skin’s elasticity and firmness.
