Health insurance claims by women 31% less than men: Survey

According to a survey by SecureNow Insurance Brokers, the average amount of health insurance claims made by women is 31% less than that of men, although the average length of hospital stay is almost the same for both.

The cost of hospitalization per day for women is also much lower than for men, as in a survey titled ‘Health Insurance Claims: Impact of Gender’, an InsurTech platform focused on selling commercial insurance to SMEs and mid-market customers. stated in.

The survey said that motherhood (13.6%), genitourinary system diseases (12.7%), and eye diseases (11.6%) are the three top medical concerns for which women have claimed health insurance.

Other top concerns for women (as calculated), are diseases of the digestive system (5.8%) and the respiratory system (4.7%).

In terms of value, the total amount of claims was for maternity (11.8%), diseases of the genitourinary system (11.2%), and neoplasms (10.8%). This survey was conducted during 2021-22 in which 839 persons participated. 40% of the respondents were from three tie-1 cities – New Delhi, Bengaluru and Mumbai.

The average length of hospital stay is roughly the same for men and women, which is about five days.

“Low claim costs for women require a deeper understanding. It is not that women get sick less, but that they have lower daily costs. Our primary research shows that women are sometimes treated in less expensive hospitals. or undergo more basic treatment. The good thing is that women are claiming health insurance on a large scale, but they should also get the benefit of the best possible treatments.” Kapil Mehta, Co-Founder, SecureNow Insurance Broker Pvt Ltd said.

In the case of men, the top three causes of count claims are diseases of the circulatory system (13%), diseases of the genitourinary system (10%), and diseases of the eye (9%). This means that in terms of the total number of claims against each disease for men, these three medical concerns top the list.

The top three reasons for making male health insurance claims based on value (ie total amount of claims in rupees) are circulatory system diseases (24%), digestive system diseases (9%), and respiratory tract diseases ( 8%).

Diseases of the digestive system and diseases of the respiratory system are not by number but by cost, which means that the cost per claim for them is relatively high.
