Heavy rain continues in two districts; 47 shifted to relief centers in Dakshina Kannada

Heavy rains continued in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts on Saturday as well. The Dakshina Kannada district administration shifted 47 people, whose homes were found in danger in Sulia taluk, to relief centres.

Udupi district recorded an average of 116 mm of rain in the 24-hour period ending at 8 am on Saturday. Shivpura gram panchayat recorded the highest rainfall of 186.5 mm during this period.

Hebri taluk recorded the highest average rainfall of 181.2 mm, followed by Udupi taluk with 122.6 mm, Karkala taluk 117 mm, Brahmavar taluk 116.6 mm, Bindur taluk 107 mm, 94.8 mm. in Kaup taluk, and 90.6 mm in Kundapur taluk.

A gaushala of Govinda Nayak in Siddhapura village and a residential house of Kalayya Acharya in Hakaladi village of Kundapur taluk were partially damaged. The Udupi district administration, in a press release, said the administration has estimated a loss of Rs 25,000 each.

An agricultural laborer, Babu Pujari, drowned after accidentally falling at Marikere in Handi village following heavy wind and rain on Thursday, Bindoor police said. Satish Bangera, 45, a resident of Iravatturu village in Karkala taluk, died on Friday afternoon after he was washed away in a flowing stream, police said.

Dakshina Kannada district recorded an average of 84 mm of rain in a span of 24 hours. Moodbidri taluk recorded the highest average of 124 mm. Srithadi gram panchayat in this taluk received 186.5 mm of rain, one of the five places in the state that received heavy rainfall.

Belthangadi taluk recorded an average of 95.4 mm, followed by Sulia 78.2 mm, Mangaluru 77.9 mm, Puttur 76.1 mm, Kadaba 72.5 mm and Bantwal taluk 71.9 mm.

At least 47 people from Kalmakar and Sampaje villages in Sulia taluk, who are facing the threat of landslides, were evacuated and rehabilitated at the government school in Kalmakar and Sajjan Pratishthan Bhawan in Sampaje.

Sixteen electric poles, three transformers and a 0.76 km long power supply line were damaged. A bridge and a 0.18-km-long major district road were also damaged.

The level of Netravati in Bantwal was 6.8 meters against the danger level of 8.5 metres. The water level of the river at Uppinangadi was 28 meters while the danger level was 31.5 metres. The water level at Thumbe Vented Dam was 5.7 meters while the danger level was 7 metres.

The India Meteorological Department has predicted moderate to heavy rainfall at isolated places over Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts for the next three days.
