Chennai Rains: It was a busy day for the meme makers as there was heavy rain in Chennai.

Heavy rains lashed Chennai and its adjoining areas on Sunday, leading to waterlogging at many places. The Tamil Nadu capital received about 20 cm of rain on Sunday. Meteorological Office also Forecast Heavy to very heavy rains lashed 14 districts of Tamil Nadu including Chennai, Vellore, Nagapattinam, Karaikal today. While schools and most government offices will remain closed, the rains have sparked a flood of memes on social media. #ChennaiRain is trending high on Twitter since yesterday. The meme-makers have used everything from movie stills to popular dialogues to capture the mood of the city.

While most government offices in Tamil Nadu will remain closed today, Chief Minister MK Stalin appealed to private firms to declare a holiday or allow employees to work from home.

Many people shared pictures of waterlogged roads. One described the landscape as “the river in our street and the lake in our house”.

It was raining intermittently since Saturday in Chennai and several suburbs. The incessant rain since Saturday night was the heaviest in recent years – leading to water-logging in many areas. The low-lying houses were flooded as the rain continued on Sunday.

Pump sets have been installed at 500 places by the state government to remove the stagnant water. Over 50,000 food packets have been distributed and relief camps have also been opened in the city to provide food, shelter and medical care.
