Heavy rain in North Telangana districts

Flood waters entered several residential colonies and low-lying areas were covered with water.

The India Meteorological Department has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in Telangana for the next two days.

Several districts including Peddapalli, Jaishankar Bhupalpally, Mulugu, Asifabad, Nirmal, Adilabad, Bhadradri-Kothagudem and Khammam have been put on red alert for the next two days. Moderate to heavy rains are likely over other parts of the state. Due to the formation of a low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, many parts of the state have been receiving heavy rains for the last few days.

Heavy rain continues in Rajanna-Sircilla, Warangal and Khammam districts since Monday. Flood waters entered several residential colonies and low-lying areas were covered with water. Many people are reported to be trapped in overflowing canals, while roads in many villages have been cut.

Sircilla in particular bore the brunt of the submergence of many colonies. Water entered the bus stand complex as well as the newly created district collectorate, while residents of several colonies faced difficulties as water entered their homes. A control room has been set up and holidays have been declared in educational institutions in view of the heavy rains.

District Collector Anurag Jayanti said, “Efforts are on to assess the damage to property and crops and called upon people to report their damages to the district authorities through the control room (phone number 9398684240).

Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao has asked the collectors of all the districts in New Delhi at this time to remain alert and take steps to deal with any situation in view of the forecast of heavy rains in the next few days. The chief minister is expected to hold a review meeting with senior officials later in the day to assess the situation and take steps accordingly.

Minister KT Rama Rao held a teleconference with the Rajanna-Sircilla district administration and directed them to intensify relief and rehabilitation measures. Relief camps should be set up and people from low-lying areas should be shifted to safer places. He directed the concerned officials to deploy disaster response force teams in the district and take steps to divert the flood waters.

Rama Rao directed the officials to take necessary steps to avoid inconvenience to the people in view of the heavy rains in the district for the last three days. The concerned authorities should remain on high alert as more rain is expected in the next 48 hours and steps should be taken to instil confidence among the affected people that the administration is ready to deal with any situation.
